The battle to save the kingdoms devastated by the Plague culminates in this exhilarating finale to the Whispers from Mirrowen trilogy.

If there is anything more dangerous than the Plague itself, it is the journey that awaits those sworn to stop it. Tyrus, the renegade magic-wielder exiled from Kenatos, knows this firsthand. His original mission through the Scourgelands met a tragic end, leaving him as the sole survivor.

Now all hope lies with his daughter, Phae, the uniquely gifted Dryad-born who can not only steal memories but also summon the power of the fireblood - and who alone has the power to breach the lost gate of Mirrowen. But first Phae and the comrades who have come to her aid must survive the most dangerous place on earth the Scourgelands.

The menacing woods prove every bit as treacherous as reputed. Murder, sacrifice, deception, and an epic battle with a beast ensue. Will Phae reach the land beyond the grasp of the deadly Plague...or will the quest through the Scourgelands end in tragedy once again?

I hate long-winded book reviews. The reviewer tries to convince you how smart he or she is and in the process divulges part of the story...or exposes the denouement, the final intricacies around which the plot is wound. I promise I am not going to do that here. This book is the final act in a trilogy developed by Jeff Wheeler. If you have not read the first two books, I encourage you to leave this one alone for now and return to it after you have digested those that came before.

This book, and indeed the entire series, is otherworldly. If you have read J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Stephen Donaldson, Terry Brooks, Katherine Kurtz, or maybe even Anne McCaffrey, then you probably should read this series by Jeff Wheeler. If you like the stories and the settings and the plot twists, no matter how implausible they seem to the organized mind, then you will probably like this series of books. If you enjoy thinking about creatures and entities and yes, people, who have strange and wonderful powers of the body and of the mind, then you will like these books. If you sometimes wonder about the origin of our earth and the potential for a parallel existence, or portals through which travel, no matter how ill-advised, leads to unknown or perilous events, then you will definitely like these books. If you enjoy strong characters who work and fail then try again and again eventually overcoming dangers and situations that we can barely imagine...or maybe not....then you really should read these books.

These books represent a unique portrayal of a "modern" concept of story telling called "fantasy fiction..". There are a lot of fantasy writers out there. Some of them are outstanding, some not so much. There are a lot of books that "borrow" characterizations from the masters. There are some series' that defy description when it comes to length and number of books, each one getting progressively worse than those that came before. So when I say that these books are "unique", that is really saying something. I like these books. I really do like them. This book, the final chapter in the 'Whispers From Mirrowen' trilogy, is at least as good as the two that preceded it...and that is saying quite a lot given the numbers of sequels that fail so miserably when a well-intentioned author runs out of steam or worse yet, just loses interest.

I am giving this book, and indeed the whole series, four stars. Why not five..?? Well, since you asked. I believe there are a few authors in this genre that do a great job. They develop their characters and deliver on the promise of exciting adventures. They stretch our minds and through "suspension of disbelief" allow us to become absorbed in the stories. Jeff Wheeler is one of those authors. He is not Tolkien, or Donaldson....yet. But he writes a good story. Try these books. I think you will really enjoy them.

Poisonwell Whispers from Mirrowen Book 3 (Audible Audio Edition) Jeff Wheeler Sue Pitkin Brilliance Audio Books Reviews

I enjoyed the trilogy and recommend it. I like Poisonwell most of all three. It was engaging and he made me want to get to the climax. It was an exciting and enjoyable journey. I felt that Jeff's point of view was well represented in the story. I really liked the transitional journal entries between chapters. They really do a good job of connecting story components I'd have otherwise missed and it made the story flow more smoothly as a result and reminded me of WHY the entire time.
The author lost what made the first book so good for me, varied characters and seeing interactions and situations from their perspectives. Almost the entire book takes place with one character and it's not even an enjoyable one. Backstory and revelations are almost exclusive for this character. The original three felt neglected and pushed to the side. It made the book feel long and the story dragged because of it. I found myself skimming paragraphs instead of reading because it was repeating things the character had already thought or felt. And that character was the only one that got a decent end, the others just felt like "oh yeah, this happened to them." and then it was over. Weak end to a strong start.
Reading the ending of this trilogy brings me hope that pain is a teacher to understand joy.
Phea, her father, and all those involved to cleanse the Scourgelands take a long and painful journey there. They first meet the empress before entering it. Then they have many, many trials while there, trying to keep each other alive, and last Phea fulfilling her role.
We learn who Shion is and the very evil Rike whose been putting the plague on the people. You learn it all!
Most importantly, we get to enter Mirrowen!
I enjoyed this series a lot, and proud to say I lost sleep, too. I would encourage all to read this series just for the ending and Mirrowen.
Poisonwell is the last book in the Whispers of Mirrowen trilogy, and delivers the final adventure of a group of once strangers, now friends who have committed their lives to combat a plague and those who are in league to prevent them. The cast of characters are all so rich, and the cultures and beliefs all so diverse, that it’s amazing to me how well they come together. The good guys are much more than skin deep. Even the “bad guys” elicit a depth of understanding that makes you at least able to identify with them a bit, if not totally agree with their tactics. Wheeler does an excellent job of demonstrating how differences can bring us together and make us stronger, rather than the opposite, if we’re brave enough to try.

The pace in this book is also amazing. From start to finish, you just can’t find a good place to stop and put the book down. It’s intense. I stayed up until 2AM to finish it, and it was completely worth losing sleep over. The reveal at the climax of the book (no spoilers, I promise) is inspired, and surprising, yet fits perfectly with the story. Sometimes, when I finish reading a book, and particularly a trilogy or series, even with a satisfying ending there are often threads left hanging. Not this book. Every question is answered, every curiosity satisfied. It’s a wonderful culmination and closure, even if I’m a bit sad to know I may not get to spend time with these particular friends again – and yes, they feel like friends. That’s part of the strength of all of Wheeler’s books. You don’t just know the people, you really like them. Not in spite of their flaws, but because of them!
I’ve loved pretty much everything this author has written, but was really impressed with this book and how it came together. I’ll be anxiously awaiting anything and everything yet to come from him.

NOTE I received a free, advance copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for my unbiased review.
