When I was a boy in Scotland I was fond of everything that was wild, and all my life I've been growing fonder and fonder of wild places and wild creatures. Fortunately around my native town of Dunbar, by the stormy North Sea, there was no lack of wildness, though most of the land lay in smooth cultivation. With red-blooded playmates, wild as myself, I loved to wander in the fields to hear the birds sing, and along the seashore to gaze and wonder at the shells and seaweeds, eels and crabs in the pools among the rocks when the tide was low; and best of all to watch the waves in awful storms thundering on the black headlands and craggy ruins of the old Dunbar Castle when the sea and the sky, the waves and the clouds, were mingled together as one.

This is a nicely written book by John Muir, which gives some insights into the mind of a man/author that I have only recently discovered. I think that reading this has given me a better understanding of this man and his works. This was a quick read, and well worth every minute of my time.
Background of John Muir and amazing adventurous childhood, quite the inventor and hard worker. Engaged in life and the beauty of.
I love reading about other people's lives. I gives me a look at what makes them tick and often suggests something I might decide to do. I love going walk-about and this book fed that love. It inspired me to read "My First Summer in the Sierra and Selected Essays (Library of America Paperback Classics)" and "Stickeen [with Biographical Introduction]". I am now reading "The Mountains of California".
A very interesting account of the life of an immigrant family in the 19th century. John Muir, however, was not your normal boy. He was full of mischief and had a very inquiring mind. An attitude that allowed him to be what he wanted to be and do what he wanted. Early Wisconsin seems to have been an ideal environment.
So interesting! Short easy read.
John Muir was a genius of natural understanding, and this book doesn't really explain why. His life is beyond explanation. But he sure can tell a tale! It's a fascinating look at new immigrants to the U.S. in the 1800's. John Muir is such a man apart that every page is mindblowing. He has thoughts and experiences that will appeal to nearly every reader. His schooling was remarkable, his work ethic unrelenting, his desire to learn insatiable, his boldness irrefutable. He relates his thought processes in a way that opens the window to his soul, and you learn to know a man who you really want to know. His instincts, thoughts, motives, and wonderings guide the reader's mind to productive and beneficial thoughts.
I loved this book!
I found this to be an enjoyable story of John Muir's boyhood, written in a style free of the flowery, stilted English so common during the era. It seems honest and straightforward, avoiding the slant and judgment that would have been so easy in describing the hard life John Muir would live as a child, sometimes working 17 hours during the hottest summer months, made to dig a well by hand chipping into sandstone far into the ground, sometimes left on his own digging for hours while his father worked elsewhere on the farm--and very nearly being overcome by noxious gases in the process, being discouraged in his initial attempts at self-education through books and in his curiosity to explore some amazing mechanical inventions. Through it all he overcame the obstacles. Brought to Wisconsin from Scotland as a young child, Muir still managed to find joy in his hard life in rural, backwoods Wisconsin in the company of his young siblings as they explored their new world living so close to the land. This story was a hopeful one, as it led to his eventual breakaway and opportunities for a more formal education and then an even more hopeful realization. His father had warned him that his strict upbringing would foreshadow the world he would enter as a young man. Instead, Muir found that as he moved beyond the farm, it would instead be filled with helpful and caring people. One feels his own outlook might have had much to do with that, and his strict and demanding childhood must have made his appreciation of the forests and freedom of the high Sierras so much more intense as a new world of wonder.
